Technology Is a Tool. A Hammer Doesn't Make an Architect.
Technical decentralization cannot create human autonomy by itself; tools change infrastructure, but agency still depends on the ability to understand, judge and act.
Technology is a tool. A hammer doesn’t make an architect.
Web3 is repeating the same mistake as all previous “revolutions”—substituting infrastructure change for system change. But if the same people with the same mindset adopt decentralized approaches, they will recreate the same hierarchies, the same monopolies, the same capture mechanisms—just on the blockchain.
This is already happening. Look at the real Web3: 1% of wallets own the majority of tokens in most “decentralized” ecosystems. DAOs are being captured by vote by the same venture capital firms that first bought the tokens. “Return control to users”—but users haven’t changed; they still don’t read whitepapers, don’t understand smart contracts, and don’t participate in governance.
The real question isn’t “how is the network structured?” but “how are humans structured within this network?”
Control isn’t a technical category. It’s cognitive and cultural. A person who can’t think for themselves will hand over control to an algorithm just as readily as they once did to a corporation. The delegation mechanism will simply become more elegant.
Subjectivity—that’s what they can’t discuss at summits. Because it can’t be deployed.
