The Control Paradox: What's Missing From the Human-vs-AI Debate

Human unpredictability can be both risk and creative resource, while reliable AI benefits from bounded execution; responsibility therefore cannot be symmetrical between human and machine.

I recently came across a post by Frederick Tschernutter raising a compelling paradox: the world insists AI must be deterministic and kept under human control — yet the human brain is anything but deterministic. His resolution: not one-directional control, but mutual oversight, where both human and machine stay transparent and accountable to each other.

As a systems architect, this hits less as philosophy and more as daily practice. Every time I define context boundaries or fallback logic for an AI system, I’m encoding ethical and semantic limits — what it may decide alone, and what it must escalate. That’s where the post’s framing needs three distinctions.

First. Human unpredictability isn’t one phenomenon — it’s two. There’s unpredictability as risk: fear, fatigue, ideology, abandoning your own principles under pressure. And unpredictability as a resource: intuition, improvisation, reaching solutions absent from the input data. The post leans on the first to question humans’ right to oversight — but it’s the second that makes humans irreplaceable next to a machine. Conflating them produces systems with badly drawn lines of accountability.

Second. Control isn’t just predictable behavior — it’s who bears the cost when a decision fails. We don’t ask humans to be predictable; we ask them to be accountable. AI, however auditable, has no skin in the game. This is where “mutual oversight” symmetry breaks down.

Third — perhaps the crux. Effective human thinking needs freedom and minimal constraints; that’s where non-obvious solutions come from. AI reliability needs the opposite: tight context boundaries. Not who controls whom — complementarity through opposite optimal conditions.

Which brings me to why I’m writing this. The industry needs to move past abstract “mutual oversight” toward a modern three laws of robotics — not Asimov’s device, but a working standard for systems already making irreversible decisions. The difference between Skynet and RoboCop isn’t intelligence level — it’s whether the system’s non-negotiable boundaries are actually defined. Murphy stays human within constraints. Skynet is a system with none left.

This matters now, before autonomous systems become default in high-stakes decisions. Does the industry need such a rulebook — and who should write it: engineers, regulators, or an open cross-industry standard? Curious where people land, including the original author..
