Vendor dependence can become both architectural and cognitive dependence: systems lose sovereignty when products cannot escape a provider and humans lose it when they outsource the judgment needed to evaluate the tool.

You build on it. Then your architecture. Then your promises to clients. Then one day you do the math and realize — leaving costs more than staying.
This isn’t vendor lock-in. It’s dependency engineered at the level of how you think about your product.
OpenAI, Anthropic, Google don’t sell tools. They sell infrastructure for addiction. Beautifully packaged. With standing ovations at conferences.
And there’s a second effect nobody talks about.
When AI thinks for you — something atrophies. Not for everyone. Not always. But the risk is real. GPS already killed our sense of direction. Calculators made mental math feel weird. AI will take something else. We just don’t know what yet.
I build on local LLMs — deliberately. Not on principle. On architecture: I want to know exactly what’s running inside my product.
Know whose needle is in your stack.
Sometimes that’s the right call. Sometimes it’s not.
